That is to say, near or associated with the speaker.
This may be used in place of the more general non-human demonstrative
ndi when the associated noun phrase is areal. However, unlike
ndi and the other regular demonstratives, which may be used both
deictically and anaphorically, njan is used only deictically, that
is, with respect to actual physical location. For example, ndi yun
‟this land” may refer either to the area in which the speaker is physically
located or to the area that is the topic of conversation, but njan yun
may refer only to the area in which he or she is located. The English
translation this here will often be appropriate.
