The only species of salamander found in the region is the Long-toed Salamander {\it Ambystoma macrodactylum\/}. No lizards are found in the region. However, this term is applied to other varieties of salamander and to lizards, such as the geckos sold as pets.

Salamanders are strongly tabooed and avoided by traditional people. This taboo generally extends to lizards.
