This portage connects the Fraser River, which drains into the Pacific Ocean and Summit Lake, the southernmost source of the Peace River, which drains into the Arctic Ocean. The high point of the trail forms the boundary between the territory of the Lheidli T'enneh and that of the Tsek'ene (Sekani). Long used by native people, it saw heavy use by European settlers beginning with the gold rush of 1869.
