Etymology: The immediate source of this word is Plains Cree sōniyāw ᓲᓂᔮᐤ. It has been proposed that originated in Northern Iroquian, where it apparently meant ‟silver”, from which it was borrowed into Proto-Central Algonquian, one of the descendants of which is Saulteaux. Plains Cree borrowed it from Saulteaux. See Colette (2020).
