he drums

This refers to the sound made by male Ruffed Grouse, q.v., in the spring both for territorial defense and mate attraction. Although described in English as ``drumming'', this sound is actually made by the cupped wings striking the air as the grouse flaps them upwards and forward. This Carrier verb is not used to refer to the other sounds that in English are referred to as drumming. The sounds that are produced by striking a reverberant object are described by the verbs 'ulhghalh, q.v. and 'ulht'o, q.v..
