If placed immediately before the verb 'aw is merely emphatic, and if emphasis is not desired, is omitted. However, if something other than the verb is to be brought within the scope of negation, 'aw is obligatory and must precede whatever is negated. An exception to this is that a topic is within scope even if it prececes 'aw.
